Ear Wax Removal

Wax is the natural product produced in the ears. Its function is to protect, lubricate and clean the ears. It can be dry and flaky, firm or very soft and sticky. Wax is being produced continually by the ears and migrates outwards. The ear is usually self-cleaning however sometimes this process is interrupted and a build-up occurs. As a result, you may then experience any of the following:

  • A blocked feeling in the ears

  • Sticky ear

  • Pain and/or discomfort (ear ache)

  • Tinnitus – a ringing in the ears

  • A temporary reduced ability to hear

  • If you wear hearing aids, they may become blocked or whistle

Excessive ear wax can be the cause of discomfort in the ear. You should avoid cotton buds, these should not be used as a method of wax removal as it is more likely to compact the wax further.

If you are experiencing any of the above or have concerns about your hearing, then either contact the Horsham Hearing Centre or your GP Surgery for further advice. We provide a professional and prompt alternative service for ear wax removal at the Horsham Hearing Centre.

Should you decide to visit your local surgery; the GP or Practice Nurse will advise you on wax removal. Although the service is free, it may take many weeks to arrange an appointment. We are also aware that some GP surgeries are no longer carrying out this procedure.

At the Horsham Hearing Centre, most ear wax extraction procedures are carried out using the Micro Suction method, according to best practice recommended by all associated bodies.

Microsuction is an instant and effective ear wax extraction treatment.

This is a safe, gentle and very effective method of wax removal and in the majority of cases provides instant relief and restores full hearing immediately. Using magnification to view the ear canal, a micro suction tube is slowly inserted into the ear and the wax is removed. We will also show you a video of before and after the procedure, using our video otoscope,

Unless you have a perforated eardrum, it is preferable to insert a few drops of olive oil into the ear canal for a period of 2 to 3 days prior to your appointment, which will make it easier to remove the wax and unblock ears.

The removal of ear wax is a completely safe procedure.
